Police issue 50 more fines over Downing Street Partygate scandal

The Metropolitan Police has issued more than 50 further fines over lockdown-busting parties in Downing Street and Whitehall, the force announced Thursday.

It brings the total number of fixed-penalty notices in relation to the Partygate scandal to more than 100, with the investigation ongoing.

Those fined so far include U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie and Chancellor Rishi Sunak. The police are not expected to release the identities of others fined.

However, Downing Street said it would be made public if the head of the civil service, Simon Case, is penalized.

Some local Conservative leaders blamed losses at last week’s local elections on Johnson’s damaged standing in the wake of Partygate. But Johnson insisted the message sent by voters was that they wanted him to focus on “the big issues that matter.”
